The Big, Unnecessary Numbers Behind the Little King of Spain and Barcelona

goodmenproject:

Xavi doesn’t look like your traditional athlete, Elliot Turner writes, but that doesn’t make him any less of one. Sounds familiar, no?

This piece is part of a special series on the End of Gender. This series includes bloggers from Role/Reboot, Good Men Project, The Huffington Post, Salon, HyperVocal, Ms. Magazine, YourTango, Psychology Today, Princess Free Zone, The Next Great Generation, and Man-Making.

Sometimes you only need one glance to recognize genius. In the painting, a landscape will surround you. In writing, a sentence jumps off the page. Sport is no different, yet the physical component clouds the view. Yes, sport requires athleticism. But our own societal prejudices—classifying a gender’s physical trait as desirable or discard-able—also cast a fog over our own eyes. Broad shoulders, bulging biceps, thunder thighs, Xavi Hernandez has none of these. He would never be confused with Mark McGuire or another juiced-up home-run hitter from baseball’s Steroid Era. He’s just the essential soccer player to Spain’s dominance of Europe and the World.

The passing of a La Roja Legend… Chus Pereda:

Remebering Chus, a legendary FC Barcelona midfielder for 8 seasons, who played a part in the history of Spanish football when he played for the first La Roja team to win a UEFA Euro Championship in 1964, passed away yesterday at the age of 73.

“He is one of the reasons for the success that La Seleccion is today,” says Del Bosque, “He was a great player, continued to remain very close to La Seleccion, and he is part of the history and success of Spanish football. He had a great appreciation for the sport. As a person, he was a great guy, very loving, very affectionate, he was always very aware of us and always very close to the team.”

May he rest in peace.

i can never sufficiently express just how much i adore this man.

“We talk , we talk a lot, Íker and I. We do. And not now because of that Barça-Madrid fight. No, no. We have talked all our lives, our friendship is at least 15 years strong, since we met at the Sub-17. We put our friendship before everything else.” - Xavi Hernandez, on his relationship with Iker Casillas.

Spain Vs Chile Fight Between Players … what a bad end of the game :-(

This shows how: Arbeloa, Busquets and Ramos are the usual hotheads who can’t calm down for shit.Especially Arbeloa who started the whole thing when Iniesta was simply confronting the opponent (not fucking shoving him).

Pepe was awesome trying to break up the argument (and even pulling Casillas firmly away at the end though you can’t see it here); Pedro and Nando too were pretty cool, trying to calm down the Chilean players even though the Chileans shoved them around a bit.

my creys~ everyone standing up for everyone (even if it IS a pretty shitty ending)

also—- SANTI AND RAMOS GOING OUT OF THEIR WAY TO SHAKE *EVERY* CHILEAN PLAYER’S HAND. somebody hold me—
